I really enjoy Lavazza coffee and appreciate the flavor of these Nespresso capsules. I own a versatile machine that accommodates various types of capsules—Nespresso, ESE, Dolce Gusto, and even ground coffee—simply by changing the capsule holder. In the past, I’ve had no issues using several brands of Nespresso capsules. However, these aluminum capsules only function about 50-60% of the time in my machine. The three little prongs meant to puncture the smaller end of the capsule sometimes just bend the aluminum instead of making a hole. As a result, the machine builds up pressure but fails to deliver any coffee before shutting off. Once under pressure, the machine can’t be opened, and it takes 2-3 hours for the pressure to drop.

To get around this, I’ve started using a sharp object to create a small hole in the capsule’s small end. Unfortunately, I think I’ll stop purchasing Lavazza capsules and return to the Nespresso brands I’ve used before, like Solimo and Peets. It’s a shame, as I truly enjoy Lavazza.

The product arrived promptly and matched the description perfectly. One of the boxes contained decaf, which was a delightful surprise since we sometimes need it for guests. The other flavors were all regular espresso, and they taste fantastic. I highly recommend this product!

Having spent three years in Italy, one of the things I miss the most is the coffee! These Lavazza pods are fantastic and truly transport me back. The flavor is robust yet nuanced, and they taste fresh—unlike some pods that can taste stale. Plus, they are priced very competitively compared to other major Nespresso pods.

I bought two packs of ten based on the favorable reviews, but I’m quite disappointed.

    THE BAD:
Out of ten capsules, only seven worked properly. Using them in my Nespresso Pixie was frustrating due to the poor flow rate; it takes two to three times longer to brew an espresso compared to original and other third-party pods I’ve used. This puts extra strain on the pump, potentially reducing its lifespan. The three non-working capsules were completely torn at the top where they’re supposed to be punctured. Additionally, some capsules fail to puncture correctly, forcing you to eject and retry—very annoying.

    THE GOOD:
When they do work, the capsules produce a decent espresso shot. While not as strong or smooth as other options I’ve tried, they’re acceptable enough for making a small Americano for friends who aren’t coffee aficionados.

    OVERALL RECOMMENDATION:
If you’re a coffee or espresso connoisseur seeking the highest quality shots from your Nespresso and prefer to avoid defective pods, these aren’t for you. However, if you’re looking to save some money and can tolerate an average espresso or Americano, these might suit you—but be aware that some will fail, so consider if you’re really saving money in the long run.

Short summary: Lavazza is a solid brand for coffee and espresso beans. They previously offered poor-quality plastic Nespresso capsules, but their switch to aluminum has significantly improved the product. I enjoy their capsules, but due to some issues, I only buy them when they are on sale.

Longer version: For years, I’ve been a fan of Lavazza’s Super Crema whole beans—a robust espresso roast—using them in my Breville XL 870 espresso machine. These beans are fantastic because they’re non-oily, preventing any clogging in the grinder. Having trusted Lavazza for whole beans, I decided to try their Nespresso pods a couple of years ago, but I found them to be terrible. The plastic capsules didn’t work reliably with my Original line Essenza Mini, and many other consumers reported similar frustrations.

However, credit where it’s due: Lavazza acknowledged the issue and transitioned to aluminum capsules while also lowering prices, likely to win back dissatisfied customers. I gave them another chance and appreciated their stronger blends (12 and 13). Recently, I tried the Medium Dark (11) blend on sale and found the flavor quite pleasant. That said, there are some issues that make me reluctant to buy them unless they’re discounted:

1.) I ordered a 6-pack (60 capsules), and about a third of the capsules arrived seriously bent and crumpled. This might explain the sale price. To use them, I had to reshape them carefully and place them in the Nespresso machine with caution, ensuring the sharp points punctured the foil properly.

2.) The Lavazza Originaline capsules appear to lack a paper filter in the tapered end, unlike Nespresso capsules, which is a minor issue. When I insert Lavazza capsules, clear water often comes out for the first 1-2 seconds. This seems to dilute the espresso slightly. Sometimes, I press the button and hold the cup away until the clear water stops before quickly placing the cup back.

While these issues aren’t catastrophic, they disrupt the experience. For these reasons, I would recommend Lavazza capsules only if the price is significantly lower—ideally around 50% of what I would pay for Nespresso-branded capsules—not if they’re close to Nespresso prices.

My OriginalLine capsule ratings, in order:
    Nespresso (clear #1)
    Peets
    Starbucks
Then, further down the list, definitely usable but only to be purchased on sale:
    Lavazza
    L’Or

While it’s not overly complicated, there is a bit of a learning curve. Considering the price and quality, the minor inconvenience is manageable. I’ve noticed that about 30% of the capsules don’t seem to be picked up by the Nespresso machine. To ensure they work properly, you need to hold the capsule in place as you close the chamber. Additionally, recycling the pods takes some effort: I empty the coffee grounds into the compost and place the plastic shells in the recycling bin.

I typically order the Fortissio Lungo directly, but it’s frustrating to have to pay for shipping on minimum orders. I noticed that Nespresso has expanded their options, so I decided to give this one a try. The flavor is a bit milder than my favorite, maybe around a 5 or 6, but it’s not terrible. However, you’ll quickly notice that the capsules themselves have a different design that seems cheaper. In my older machine, they tend to jam every other time I use them, which is incredibly annoying. Other Starbucks capsules are nearly identical to Nespresso, so I’m not sure why Lavazza opted for a cheaper design. I actually find the taste to be somewhat better than Starbucks, but the capsule issue is a major drawback. You save about 10 cents per capsule compared to Nespresso, but given the design and flavor, I wouldn’t buy this again.

We had several Lavazza Espresso Point machines at our office, and I was truly impressed with the quality of espresso they produced using Lavazza’s proprietary capsules. It was great to discover that Lavazza offers coffee in various formats, including popular Nespresso-compatible capsules, which are made of aluminum like Nespresso’s. These aluminum capsules perform exceptionally well—they don’t jam or malfunction in the machine, unlike some plastic ones or those with paper seals. This variety pack includes a nice selection, and all the capsules had expiration dates well into the future. I hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

These capsules produce exceptional small espressos, possibly the best I’ve tried. However, many of them collapse where the injector needle is meant to puncture the cup, resulting in a messy situation with no coffee extracted. It’s frustrating to have to discard so many essentially unused capsules. If the packaging issues could be resolved, I’d gladly recommend these for their great flavors.

I absolutely loved these coffee pods! After noticing the significant price difference and reading the reviews, I decided to give them a try, and I have no regrets. This will be my go-to choice from now on. The coffee tastes fantastic, they fit perfectly in my DēLonghi Nespresso machine, and the price is quite reasonable. I highly recommend them!

I was surprised to find several flaws with these pods, especially given Lavazza’s reputation as a well-established company. Here are my three main concerns:

First, the pods are too short. They measure about 3mm less than standard Nespresso pods and those from other brands, leading to excessive water leakage into the catchment tray.

Second, the plastic construction is not sturdy. While the foil seals on both ends are a good idea, the thin plastic body tends to melt due to the high temperature of the water.

Lastly, the coffee quality doesn’t meet Lavazza’s usual standards. It seems like they’re using a blend that falls short of their typical beans or ground coffee. Personally, I much prefer Lavazza’s drip coffee, and Nespresso pods offer a significantly better experience.

Considering the savings of only about 15 cents per pod compared to Nespresso, is it really worth risking damage to a machine that can cost anywhere from $100 to $500+? I decided to return my pods.
